About Silverlake

Silver Lake, in Los Angeles, is known as the city’s “hippest neighborhoods” with its night clubs, bars, and restaurants. There have been many notable residents here like Judy Garland, Ryan Gosling, and Rachel McAdams. This commercial and residential neighborhood was built around the city reservoir. Silver Lake, the body of water, was named after the engineer who designed it.

The best land around the lake is known as the Moreno Highlands. Lake Silver’s bordering neighbors include Atwater Village, Elysian Valley, Echo Park, Westlake, East Hollywood, and Los Feliz.

Another notable person, Walt Disney, built his first major studio here in the 1930’s. Because it was located at the corner of Hyperion Avenue and Griffith Park Boulevard, the name “Hyperion” is used quite a bit in the Walt Disney Company. For example, there is the Hyperion Theater in Disneyland and Hyperion Books. Silver Lake is also known for its crisscross of municipal staircases that take visitors up and down the hills. Several stair sets are famous like the one in The Music Box, a Laurel and Hardy film. This famous flight of stairs is situated from Descanso Drive up to Vendome Street, winding around the hill.

You’ll find many beautiful Spanish style estates and condominiums ranging in price up to the multi millions. The backyard living was made for the entertainers and artists with relaxing pools, barbecue appliances, and magnificent views. Silver Lake had three public schools and four private facilities. The Silver Lake Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library is situated between the I-5 freeway and the reservoir.

The gay leather subculture created its nexus in Silver Lake in the 1970’s. Gentrification has been even more intense since 2000 and today there are many eclectic independent boutiques, fitness studios, restaurants, and coffee shops. The large population of LGBT members here is thought to be one of the reasons for the high percentage of never married men and women.
